How to protect your motorbike this winter?

Keep your motorbike in top condition this winter by using quality motorbike covers and using some of these tips on how to protect your motorbike during winter

Winter on The Gold Coast is usually pretty mild, although it can get cold during a cold snap. If you’re considering storing your bike during the colder months, cleaning it properly and placing it under quality breathable motorbike covers will prolong its life and help maintain its appearance.

Other things to do are:

·       Check the battery

A healthy motorbike battery should have a voltage reading above 12.6 volts, if it’s low, charge it before riding. Cold starts, old thick engine oil and a large amount of accessories common on modern motorbikes can place a large strain on batteries. The terminals should be cleaned and tightened, then lightly greased with suitable grease. All electrical connections should be checked and any loose wiring properly secured. If your battery voltage drops quickly it could be a sign it needs replacing

·       Check the Tyres

It’s a good safety policy to check your motorbike tyres before, as well as after every time you use it. When it gets cold, your tyre pressure can drop about 2psi for each 10.C temperature drop so it’s important to take this into consideration and check your tyres when hot after a ride and when cold

·       Antifreeze

Motorbikes fitted with a water cooling system should always use only a high quality Coolant with anti corrosive properties and ensure that it also has a low freezing point. Ensure your cooling system is always topped up with the same type and brand of coolant as some are not compatible and never use plain water

·       Chain Lubrication

Salt laden air and wet roads combine to corrode chains quickly if they are not protected by a good lubricant. Oil your chain often and before placing in winter storage.

An automatic chain lubricator is a great option so your chain is lubricated as you ride

·       Lubricate all moving parts

All moving parts such as the brake, clutch and accelerator controls need to be cleaned to remove dirt and grime, then lubricated regularly and before you place your bike under motorbike covers

·       Lights and Light Covers

It’s a good safety practice to always drive with your lights on during the day as well as nighttime. In the winter, it becomes more important as visibility can be reduced, making you harder to see. Your lights need to be checked to ensure they are working correctly, including the brake and indicators. The lens covers should be inspected and cleaned regularly

·       Brakes

Check your brakes regularly and replace the brake fluid at least once a year

·       Motorbike covers

Using motorbike covers will protect your motorbike from the worst of the winter weather as well as reducing the likely threat of vandalism and theft as most people will not bother trying to remove motorbike covers

Why Caravan covers are important to protect it from the weather?

A caravan whether you have the latest top of the range model or an older version it represents a large financial investment and needs to be taken care of in the best possible way. Using quality caravan covers is the first step in maintaining your caravan and protecting it from the weather and the hostile environment.

Caravans are made to be weather proof and they will remain in reasonable condition if left outside, but over time they will deteriorate without extra protection from the elements.

Caravan Covers Offer

Caravan covers give protection to the exterior of your caravan as well as stopping excess heat build up inside that can cause damage and fading to the interior.

·        Rain Protection

Because of atmospheric pollution there tends to be a lot of contaminants in rainwater that can affect the surface of your caravan over time. To counter this, using high quality water resistant caravan covers designed to allow the water to run off rather than pool on the surface are recommended. Before you put your caravan covers on, be sure your caravan is clean and dry. Using a high quality polish designed for automotive use will add an extra layer of protection

·        Bird Droppings and Tree Sap

Both of these sky borne contaminants will adversely affect your caravan’s external finish. Good quality caravan covers are made to withstand the acidic compounds in bird droppings, insect droppings and sap from trees, contaminants that would otherwise eat into your van’s painted surface spoiling the finish and allowing moisture to penetrate

·        UV Protection

Australia has a wonderful climate and many hours of bright, clear sunshine, especially in Queensland and the Gold Coast regions. Unfortunately, the sun also emits harmful UV rays that can quickly cause fading and discoloration as well a breakdown of your caravan surfaces. Good quality caravan covers provide total UV protection, keeping you caravan in showroom condition for years to come. This is not only to keep it looking fantastic, but to preserve its resale value if you decide to upgrade or sell it in the future

·        Damage Control

Quality caravan covers will protect your caravan from accidents and theft while you’re not using them and can also help protect them from stone damage and minor scraped when being towed long distances

·        Good Fitting Caravan Covers

When you choose caravan covers, make sure they are a good fit for your caravan as a loose cover can potentially rip in bad, windy weather and flap around causing surface damage. High quality caravan covers have a soft inner layer that is designed to avoid scratching or scuffing your van if there is any movement when being put on, removed or during road travel and in storms

·        Custom Covers

While they may be a little more expensive, custom made caravan covers are usually made using better quality materials and designed to fit your caravan like a glove. They take into account extras such as aerials, sat disks, solar panels, CCTV cameras and things like storage racks that standard caravan covers cannot accommodate. They are also much easier to put on and take off

Your caravan is your home away from home and by using good quality caravan covers you will be able to keep your caravan protected whether is left outside on in a covered area, so it all ways remains in pristine condition and is ready for your next road trip whenever you are.

Top Reasons you must have a motorbike cover

When you own a motorbike it makes sense to do everything reasonable to look after it and providing it with a suitable motorbike cover is one of the best ways to preserve its appearance and keep it in top condition.

Some of the top reasons you must have a quality motorbike cover:

·        Protection from the elements

A motorbike cover will protect your motorbike from the harsh effects of the sun, salt spray, windblown, dust, dirt and sand as well as rain and hail that can cause expensive damage

·        The best types of cover

It’s important when choosing a motorbike cover that you get a quality cover that’s designed to suit the conditions where you keep your motorbike.

·        If you keep your motorbike mainly inside a garage or under a cover like a carport them a high quality, lightweight, breathable motorbike cover is probably adequate to keep dust and airborne pollutants from damaging your paintwork.

Having a close or snug-fitting motorbike cover will deter many insects and other pests that may like to sneak under the cover to hide and cause havoc.

·        If you keep your motorbike outside in all weathers then you will need a heavy duty motorbike cover designed to withstand conditions such as UV rays from the sun and the fierce winter storms that occasionally visit the Gold Coast

Soft covers

It’s important that your motorbike cover has a soft inner lining that is neither metallic nor abrasive, so that it doesn’t scratch the paintwork. A high quality single layered motorbike cover is usually adequate for inside use, but a quality multi-layered motorbike cover is best for outdoor use as long as has the ability to breathe and allow any condensation to escape so mould and mildew will not form

Waterproof motorbike covers

A fully waterproof motorbike cover will stop moisture from the rain affecting your bike, but it may trap condensation inside, causing problems with mould and rusting as well as the discolouration of your paint and plastics. So a fully breathable, water resistant cover that although it may allow a bit of moisture to get inside will also allow it to quickly dry out quickly once the rain stops and not keep moisture trapped inside

Close or loose fit covers

Generally the better your motorbike cover fits your particular motorbike the better it will be able to protect your bike as wind can cause a motorbike cover to flap and cause damage to the surfaces

Security

Motorbike theft and vandalism is an increasing problem and having a good quality heavy duty motorbike cover will help to conceal your bike as many thieves are looking for a particular make and model to steal and will not bother to take the time to look under the cover as this increases the chances of them getting caught.

Petty vandalism where people break or steal lights or mirrors can be drastically reduced with a good quality heavy duty cover as if they can’t see them, they usually are not interested

There are some very good reasons why you must have a good quality motorbike cover to protect your motorbike from protection from the elements to keeping pests away and reducing the chances of having your bike stolen or vandalized. But always look for a breathable motorbike cover that will not scratch the paintwork.

How to choose the best covers for your car

It’s worth taking the time and energy to protect your car from the elements by investing in quality car covers.

With the huge range of car covers on the market, how do you choose the best covers for your car?

To make it easier, we have created this list of things you could consider to make your search easier:

Deciding where your car will be stored

·        Cars store under cover

When you know where your car will be kept when you’re not using it is the first step in choosing the best and most appropriate car covers.

If you’re lucky enough to have a garage or carport to park your car in, then you might be better to choose a light weight cover that is designed to keep the dust off and prevent pests from finding shelter in or around the body work.

The droppings from insects, lizards, small mammals and birds can not only look unpleasant on your car, but because of its corrosive nature, it can damage the paint.

A high quality cotton or breathable synthetic cover is a good choice, especially if you use your car on a regular basis. For those that don’t use their car every day slightly heavier cotton car covers may be the best choice as they offer more protection with its extra padding to help prevent accidental damage and scratching or denting of the sides from people passing.

·        Cars stored outside

The areas where you live and wish to store your car also needs to be taken into account. Some areas of The Gold Coast are known to have hail at different times of the year and these can cause a lot of damage to your vehicle. Choosing car covers that are heavy enough to provide adequate protection from large hailstones could be necessary.

Are you close to the coast, maybe you need car covers that are capable of protecting your car from salts pray or salt laden winds.

Other areas may be prone to high concentrations of sand or dust in the prevailing wind, which can quickly erode the finish on your car without the protection of the right type of car covers

Feature to look for when choosing car covers

·        Breathable

Regardless of the type of car covers you choose, it’s important that they are breathable so that they don’t trap moisture or condensation under them. If they were to trap moisture it could cause corrosion and discolouration of the paint work as well as any of the plastic parts that are so common on modern cars. Mould and fungi would also appear, this is unsightly as well as damaging to the lustre and paint in general and harmful to your car covers

·        Snug fitting

The better and tighter the fit of your car covers is, the less likely they are to flap around in the breeze or allow pests to move in under them. Good quality car covers have a bit of built in stretch-ability, ensuring a good fit

·        Soft inertia lining

Quality car covers have a soft lining that will not scratch or damage your car as they hug its contours

When you need car covers, choose a high quality breathable material that has a soft inside and a natural colour on the outside to avoid fading

Top Reasons to purchase quality Car Covers

Our car is often the most expensive asset we have next to our home. Having a new or near new vehicle is not a luxury, it’s a necessity, especially with the hopeless public transport system around The Gold Coast. A good quality car covers is one of the best ways to ensure your car remains in top condition for many years.

Some of the top reasons to purchase a quality car cover are:

Sun Protection

The fierce sun on The Gold Coast can cause a large amount of damage to your cars paint work and fittings, as can the salt laden air, abrasive dust and sand that can quickly destroy the beautiful finish on a car if steps to protect it are not taken.

If you are not fortunate enough to have a covered place to keep your car, a good quality car cover that is designed to suit the local conditions can make a huge difference.

It’s also vital to keep your car clean and to use a good car wax to add an additional layer of protection, not only from the sun, but also from the salt in the air and the effects of rain and condensation.

Using a car cover on a dirty car can cause the cover to dull the paint finish as it rubs against the surface of the car especially on the corners and sides.

It’s also important that the car is dry when you place on the cover as any moisture will be trapped under the car cover and may not easily escape.

Types of Car Covers

Indoor car covers are made of a light weight fabric usually designed to act as a dust sheet to keep your car looking in show room condition. They also protect the vehicle from any damage caused by movement around them that could leave scratches in unprotected paint work. Most of us would have to share a garage with lawn mowers, pushbikes, motor bikes, garden equipment and an assortment of other pieces of family equipment.

Even though a garage or carport provides substantial protection there is still the issue of corrosive air pollution that can attack paint work, chrome, plastic and rubber tyres. For this reason, there are a variety of quality indoor car covers available for you to select the most appropriated type for your individual circumstances.

Outdoor Car Covers

A good quality outdoor car cover incorporated a number of layers to afford you the best protection possible. This includes a UV protective layer, layers designed to protect from the effects of acid rain and the heavy hail stones that are known to strike around The Gold Coast at various times of the year.
An important feature of a good quality car cover is its ability to repel water, but at the same time to allow for good air circulation. This is so that any water, moisture or condensation does not build up under the cover as this can lead to the formation of mould and the breaking down of the paints surface.

Using a high quality car cover to protect your car is one of the most positive and practical ways of keeping your car looking great and maintaining its value for many years.

Top Tips to maintain your Caravans

Having caravan allows you to go on a holiday almost anywhere around the country, but a caravan is a substantial investment that requires a reasonable amount of care such as using caravan covers and spending the time to maintain it properly.

To keep your caravan in top condition, here are some top tips

Make an annual audit of your caravan

In order to ensure your van is ready for your next holiday conduct a full audit of the working parts, several months before you plan on using it. The things to check are:

·         Wheels and tyres

Check the condition and tread of your tyres and inspect the wheel rims for dents or cracks. This is also a good time to check the bearings and brakes. Tighten the wheel nuts and make sure the tyre air pressure is set at the manufacturer’s recommended pressure

·         Lights and electrics

Your external lights are an important safety feature of your caravan, so ensure they are clean and function properly. The internal lights and power fittings also need to be checked as a fault here could not only cause accidents, but become a fire hazard.

Check the external power fittings are waterproof and in good condition.
If you have solar panels check they are fixed securely and that all wiring and connections are in good condition. Check the batteries and do any required maintenance

·         Gas bottle and fittings

Make sure your gas bottles are full and do not leak. Check all the gas lines as a gas leak inside a caravan is not only very inconvenient, but can lead to a real disaster

·         Check the fresh water

The fresh water tank needs to be drained and the water replaced at least once a year as stale water is unpleasant and can harm your system. It also makes toilets and showers unpleasant to use.
Any gray water tanks should also be flushed out and left full of clean water that can be drained just before your next trip.

Sewage tanks should be emptied as soon as you return home from a trip and flushed properly. They should be filled with fresh water and drained before your next trip
Check for any water leaks and repair any you find as a water leak can quickly cause damage to your van.

Remove your caravan covers and check the exterior

All door and window seals need to be inspected and cleaned as necessary. All air vents need to be cleaned.
Check all your external hardware such as aerials, dishes, air conditioners solar showers and CCTV to ensure they are correctly mounted and in working order
Check the awning to make sure it’s free from tears or damage and is clean and working correctly.
Check your paint for scratches or signs of wear and clean both the inside and outside, use a suitable caravan polish or wax before replacing the caravan cover.

Replace your caravan cover after you complete your full maintenance audit

In order to keep your caravan in top order use a quality caravan cover and make a maintenance audit a few months before you intend to go on a trip. Ensure everything is clean and working properly, especially the wheels, tyres, breaks, fresh water and waste water systems, electrics and gas.

Top tips to consider while washing boat covers

Most boat covers are made from a solution dyed polyester fiber that’s woven into a breathable fabric and given a urethane coating, then treated using a fluorocarbon finish that gives it  excellent mildew and water repellent qualities. Because of this, they are easy to maintain and long lasting.
Some top tips to consider while washing your boat cover are:

Fitting, Your Boat Cover

When you place your cover on your boat, ensure that it has a proper support system in place so there are no areas where water can pool.

This can be done using straps or poles, set to give a “tented” effect that makes sure the water quickly runs off to stop any mold growth and damage. If allowed to pool on your boat cover water will seep through and cause damage inside. When fitting the cover add extra padding around areas such as windscreens and sharp areas to avoid wear.

Keep Your Boat Cover Clean

Try and keep leaves and other debris off your cover so mould and grime doesn’t have a chance to take hold. Ideally, your boat covers should be sprayed down with clean water once a month.
This will keep it looking clean and help delay the need for more vigorous cleaning and help it last for many seasons.

Cleaning Times

Under normal conditions, a boat cover should be cleaned every two years. This is often done while it is still on the boat for ease of handling and allowing it to naturally dry. Unless it’s a small cover and clearly stated on the label that it’s machine washable, it should not be washed in a machine.

Washing Soap

The cover should be washed using a natural soap and not a detergent although special boat cover washing solution can be used. The water should be cold or lukewarm, never hot as this can damage the boat covers waterproofing capabilities.

Always use a natural pH soap  with water that should be cold to lukewarm, but not hot.

Washing Method

  •          Begin by posing done the whole cover and brushing off any dirt with a stiff broom to remove dirt and stains.
  •          Spray with a weak solution of liquid soap and brush down with fresh clean water
  •           If stains will not wash off, try using a mixture of 1 part white vinegar, 1 part of borax powder and 2 parts of clean cold water mixed together. Spray the stained area and leave for about 10 minutes and rinse off, repeat if necessary
  •           Allow the cover to air dry completely
  •          After a few years, it’s recommended to apply a water repellant product to help protect your boat cover and extend its working life

Storing a Boat Cover
If you are storing your boat cover, always make sure it’s clean and dry before placing it in a protective bag. His will prevent the buildup of mould and mildew. Store it in a dark, cool place.

Boat covers are designed to protect your boat from the elements and keep your boat clean. They are normally made of a woven breathable fabric to keep water out while allowing any moisture to escape. They should be a tight fit and not allow water to pool.

Top things to consider while purchasing boat covers

Your boat is a considerable investment and you are advised to purchase a high quality boat cover to protect it from the elements as well as uninvited guests such as rodents and insects. The following are some tips to consider when looking to purchase a boat cover:

·         Consider just what type you need

The type of boat covers that you’ll need depends on the type of boat you have and the way you keep it. Do you store your boat under cover or is it out in the weather?

Is it kept mainly on land or in the water?

How often do you use your boat?

These questions can play a large role in the type of boat cover that’s best for you

·        Colour

Most bright colours will fade quickly and so will not look so nice after the first season. Choosing a gray or neutral colour reduces the chances of fading. The other problem is that many fabric dyes can leach out and could stain your upholstery.

·         The Right Fit

Getting a boat cover that fits your boat properly is important as a badly fitting cover can allow vermin in and may flap in the wind damaging it and your boat fittings. It’s important that the center or top of the cover is always higher than the sides so the water cannot pool or stand on it.

Most covers are water resistant, but will allow water to seep through if allowed to sit on them.

·         Check the Materials it’s Made With

Modern weather resistant materials are similar to cotton, but synthetic and last much longer as well as help to prevent mildew forming in and on your boat.

·         Check the Weave Thickness

The cover thickness is called its denier, ideally you need a 600D (denier) weave all over, some covers are mainly 300D in the center panels but 600D around the edges.

·         Your type of Boat

Do you have an open bow boat or closed?
Does it have a cabin or flying bridge?
Is it inboard or outboard?
Motorboat or sailboat?
The answers to these questions will help in deciding on the type and size of boat cover you require

·        Type of Stitching

A good boat cover will have strong top stitching ideally in a double row.

·        Stop Moisture

Your boat cover will trap the atmosphere inside your boat. It will not lead to condensation, but if moisture is present when you cover it, then it will stay there, so ensure your boat is clean and dry before covering it up.

·        Buy Quality

Be careful where you get your boat cover from and don’t just go for the cheapest one around. The best advice is to ask other boat owners about their covers and who supplied them. They will soon tell you the best places and brands to buy and more importantly which to avoid. If you can’t decide check the reviews on the net and at boat club sites.

Your boat is worth taking the time to protect with a quality boat cover, one that protects it from the elements and insects as well as rodents looking for a nice place for the winter. Even boats under shelter should have a well-fitting, light protective boat cover.

Top things to consider while purchasing caravan covers

Having a caravan and going walkabout is a good old Aussie tradition and has been going on since the first settlers got here, sure they didn’t have a caravan, they used a wagon or swag, but they still needed a good quality cover. Just like today’s modern Nomads who enjoy the freedom of the open road, but also need a good quality caravan cover to protect their van when not in use.

The top things to consider when purchasing caravan covers are:

·         Breathability

Having the right caravan covers is very important so you can keep your caravan in the best possible condition and protect the considerable investment you have made in it. As the weather changes and the temperatures inside your van as well as those outside changes, condensation will form on the van. If this condensation is not able to evaporate away because your cover does not breathe, then it will start to impact on the outside of the van.

It’s best to keep your caravan under cover so it’s away from the elements, but even under a protective roof like a carport it’s still important to have a high quality fully breathable cover to help keep your van in the best possible condition.

A well maintained caravan will hold its value for a long time, but one that has been allowed to go downhill quickly loses value.

It’s important to consider the type of cover you purchase and make sure that it not only breaths properly, but is waterproof as well.

·         Well Fitted Covers

You can purchase a generic cover that is designed to fit all vans or you can spend the extra and buy a cover that is made specifically for your make and model of caravan.

With the generic cover there will be some excess material that needs to be dealt with and there may be issues with getting the tension and slack areas sorted out. The other problem with these covers is they do not usually accommodate roof furniture such as satellite dishes and any solar gear such as panels or heaters that many people now have on top.

Having a custom made or buying a cover that’s made especially for your van allows you to have a cover with a good fit and allows for all your extra roof furniture and is customized for your particular needs.

·         Is Your Cover Easy to Fit

Even though most people only need to put their caravan covers on once or twice a year, it can be a very tiresome and difficult. It’s important to get a cover that is easy to put on and remove as well as store when you’re not using it. Some caravan covers require you to use two people and two step ladders to get the job done, others come with special poles to make the job easier.

Non Abrasive Liner

Having caravan covers with a nonabrasive liner is vital to ensure the outside finish is not harmed by your cover.

Caravan covers protect your van from the elements, whether they are kept under cover or in the open. The best option is to buy a breathable cover with a nonabrasive lining specify made for your caravan so it fits properly and protects your investment.
