How long do caravan covers last?

A caravan has long been seen as a status symbol…you’re retired, worked hard your whole life and now you are looking to explore and unwind without a time limit. They have grown massively in popularity over the past few years, especially with the limitations on international travel. With this, caravans have shifted from strictly retirees to just about anyone and everyone looking to explore. The only thing you really need is a reliable vehicle to tow and you can be on your way.

Lately, demand has been driven through the roof, hence prices have risen quite substantially. This reason alone solidifies the need for a high quality, protective caravan cover. Let’s talk about the need for a caravan cover, how long they last and what you can do to lengthen the life of your caravan and caravan cover.

Finding the perfect fit

Now when purchasing caravan covers, the first thing you need to ensure is that it fits your caravan perfectly. If you buy too small, you will struggle to cover the full body of the caravan, and it will ultimately rip and damage the cover, resulting in no protection and a waste of money. The best way to fit a caravan cover is to measure the caravan’s body, not spare tyres, or toolboxes. These do not need to be covered and attempting to do so may damage your cover. When measuring your caravan, give an extra 10cm-15cm to allow for aerials and air-conditioning units on the top. If a caravan cover is too tight, it will rip and damage early; too loose and it will flap in the wind and damage paint, accessories and even windows.

Placing the cover on

Placing a cover on perfectly can be a difficult job for one person, so having a second will help. Some other tips include:

·        Ensure the caravan is clean and free of dirt. If it is dirty, it will damage both your caravan and cover.

·        Make sure all vents and windows have been shut before putting cover on.

·        Remove or tuck away any sharp objects that could rip the cover.

Grab a corner at the front and walk towards the back. Tuck the rear corners in, walking back to the front whilst tensioned.

Storage of the caravan

Now where you store the caravan will be a massive factor on the effective life of the caravan cover. Although our caravan covers are well made, waterproof and UV resistant, the Australian climate will not care. Harsh sun, torrential rain and humidity are all factors that will slowly deteriorate the quality of the caravan cover over time. Covers used to last a mere year or less, our covers will last several.

Don’t buy low quality

A low quality, flimsy tarp like cover will do little to protect your caravan. It will flap in the wind and will easily rip. Buying a heavy duty, elastic hemmed cover will ensure that you are getting a cover that will truly protect your caravan.
